Labelled the ‘balcony of the south west’ because of its altitude, Angoulême was once a prized town due to its location linking many different roads. Sieges and conquests from the Roman era onwards have left their mark; while the forts no longer remain the old town is well preserved, and among the medieval architecture is a series of cobbled streets that make up the restaurant quarter. The town also has a long association with the animation and illustration industries; the Forum International des Technologies de l’Animation festival takes place every year, and the Comic Strip Museum pays homage to the art form.
