Introduction
Cherbourg-Octeville is located on the north-western tip of France and is therefore slightly geographically isolated at the end of the N13 highway which leads to Caen. It is however well-connected by regular ferry connections to European destinations including Portsmouth, Poole, Dublin and Rosslare. There is also a local airport serving the town, Maupertus-sur-Mer. This has limited domestic and international flights; the nearest airports with more choice in international destinations are Caen-Carpiquet Airport (100km) and Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport (120km).Cherbourg-Octeville's main station is the Gare de Cherbourg which lies 3hrs from Paris. It is also the station at the western end of the Mantes-la-Jolie to Cherbourg railway line which stretches over 300km from Cherbourg almost to Paris itself and passes through Caen.
