As the capital of the Champagne region, Epernay is where many head to visit cellars, tour vineyards and of course, taste famous champagnes. The Avenue de Champagne has no less than 110 km of underground cellars, most of which host open weekends. One of the most famous, Moët & Chandon, offer one hour tours of their maison, with many others also offering similar experiences. If you tire of learning about and sampling bubbly you can wander round the gothic Eglise Notre-Dame or visit one of the open air food markets. The centre of Epernay retains many medieval features, but if you decide to venture further afield you’ll find plush suburban villas belonging to wealthy champagne merchants.
