Rail Guide to Magdeburg

Introduction

On first impressions, some of Magdeburg’s architecture could be lifted from a Gaudi scrapbook. The Green Citadel is in fact a pink curved building that houses flats, restaurants and shops, designed by FriedensreichHundertwasser, while the Millennium Tower is a futuristic spiral-shaped construction made from wood that presides over one of Germany’s most beautiful parks, the Elbauenpark. The best place to admire the whole city from the top of St. John’s Church.

Contemporary art galleries outnumber classical ones, however history fans can head to Magdeburg Cultural History Museum or the aptly titled OstalgieKabinett, which has old toys, sporting equipment and household items. In the summer months the banks of the river Elbe and the parks host jazz festivals, theatrical performances and more.
