Nevers is one of the stops on the religious route to Santiago de Compostela, thanks to a girl from Lourdes who claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary 18 times before becoming a nun at a local convent. The Cathedral of St-Cyr-et-Ste-Juliette is worth a visit for its beautiful stained glass windows, but if you’re not keen on ecclesiastical matters there are attractions like the grand Palais Ducal, and a museum devoted to decorative arts. Walk along the banks of the Loire river, particularly lively during the summer months, and shop at the boutiques on Rue François Mitterrand. Nevers is also famous for its pottery; a blue line painted on the pavement outside the Palais Ducal leads to the town’s pottery quarter.
