Introduction
There’s a good mix of modern and historical at this university town in northern Germany. Oldenburg’s most recognisable landmark is Lappan, a medieval bell tower, but there are many other distinctive sights such as the splendid Renaissance-style Oldenburg Palace, quirky 17th century Degode House and the old Powder Tower, once part of the city’s fortifications. All the main attractions can be visited on foot as the historical city centre is pedestrianised; interspersed among these buildings are many shops.Throughout the year Oldenburg hosts many events, including a fun fair, arts and crafts fairs, the wine festival and street parties in the summer.
