With around 40 venues devoted to the arts in a city of 90,000 people, it’s safe to say culture is taken very seriously in Poitiers. Le Confort Moderne is the city’s main music and arts venue, while places like Carre Bleu are devoted to jazz. For sightseeing, the most striking landmark is the Cathedrale Saint-Pierre, with its splendidly intricate carvings. Another church of note is the Notre Dame la Grande, which stands out on summer nights when a light show illuminates its frontage. Poitiers is also home to one of the oldest universities in France (established in 1432) so there’s no shortage of bars and places to eat. Dedicated foodies can head to the Notre Dame market every Tuesday to Saturday morning.
