This is one for lovers of fairytales, castles and romantic picture postcard views of Europe.
The trip from Munich Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) isn't particularly interesting although some of the views over the countryside are beautiful.
After around 2 hours you'll arrive in a the picturesque little German town of Fussen. From here you'll need to transfer to the number 73 or 78 bus in order to get to either Neuschwanstein or Hohenschwangau, two of the most stunning castles you will ever see in your lifetime.
Neuschwanstein is Mad King Ludwig's fairytale home perched on the mountainside looking out over Bavaria whereas Hohenschwangau is the castle built by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria.
If you're spending time in southern Germany on your European rail trip you quite simply can't miss this out.
Tickets and Passes
The journey from Munich to Fussen will be covered by any rail pass which includes Germany. Bus fairs to the castles won't cost a great deal.
