Fiesta de San Isidro
Concerts, costumes and cheer dissipate into every part of Spain's capital
The Fiesta de San Isidro commemorates the patron saint of Spain. Each year many of the inhabitants of Madrid dress up in traditional costumes and parades go down the many streets. The parades include giants and big heads which are people in traditional clothing with papier-Mache heads. This is a time to enjoy the many concerts, gastronomic offerings and the festive atmosphere which dissipates into every part of Spain's capital.
Key night-time events take place in the Meadow, Las Vistillas and the Plaza Mayor, when music takes centre stage. Expect live, traditional and independent music concerts and for some fireworks, try the El Retiro Park where light and colour fills the sky surrounding the monument dedicated to Alfonso XII.
