During the last weekend of July the streets of central Rotterdam get taken over by carnival processions and brass bands. Before the carnival itself a competition to find the queen of the carnival takes place which is open to the public. Other events include the Battle of Drums, where percussionists attempt to out-drum each other. The three-day parade is influenced by Rio de Janeiro’s colourful event; nearly one million people turn up to watch the performers in dazzling outfits dancing in the streets to Latin music. In the evenings there is live music on stage, again featuring mostly Latin rhythms. The street parade is free for all to attend.
